Delivery using robots
Starship is using revolutionary robots for last mile
delivery. These robots look like an ice cooler than human-like robots. The concept is very simple. The customer places the
order through apps. The customer drops a pin on the map to specify where they are going
to meet the robots. After finalizing payment the customer has to check how much
time this robot takes to arrive. The estimated time is 15mins to max 13mins. Once
the customer place the order shopkeeper (kitchen in this case) will get a notification.
By the time the kitchen prepare food robots will stroll from its recent delivery
location to the kitchen. The kitchen will place the meal on the robot and dispatch
it. The customer will get a notification once a robot is on the routs. The customer will
get another notification once robots have arrived.
These robots are 90% autonomous. The company does not want them
to drive 100% on their own as to overseas their journey and take control
whenever required. These robots drive on pavements at a speed of 4 miles an
hour. The robot got a sophisticated optical detection system that stops bumping in
anything. It also has a camera, a two-way audio system to talk to a customer and
listen to them.
Delivery using drone
When roads fail drones are used for last mile delivery.
Initially, medical samples were delivered. Structured solely for transportation,
the organization consistently interfaces keen automatons, cloud programming and
safe ground stations to an instinctive mobile application. Ecommerce company
like Amazon, Uber has started using drone deliveries in certain countries.

How last miles delivery happen in e-commerce and Cold chain industry in India?
I have
briefly mentioned what last mile delivery is and how some organizations are
trying to get it streamlined. Now we will see last mile delivery of cold chain
industry works where keeping a constant temperature of the product is the
challenge. Some Indian startups have started working on the delivery. Their focus
is to deliver the goods (Mostly perishable food) within the required temperature
range.
Temperature
the requirement to store fruits and vegetables, milk product, ice creams, meats and
fish are not the same. Fruits and vegetable can be stored in positive temperature
range from 0 degrees c to 10 degrees c, while meat required negative temp from -5
degrees to – 20 degrees, while ice cream is stored below -18 degrees.
In India goods
are delivered to the customer in Van or motorcycle using an insulated ice box.
Goods are stored in the cold storage areas and distributed to the various area as
per the delivery. Customers place the order using an app. Once the order is placed it
takes min 1.5 hrs to 24 hrs. Once the order is packed it is placed in the ice
box and delivered it to the customer. This traveling time is min 30 mins to 4 hrs
depending upon the destination and traffic situation. While goods are in transit,
it is important to maintain the product temp within the required temperature
range. To maintain the temperature inside the box are depend on the two factors.
One is insulation thickness of the box wall and other the cool pads (Cartridges
which stored thermal energy) or dry ice used in the box. For positive temperature
basically, 25mm thick puff insulation is used while negative it varies from 35mm
to 50mm thick puff insulation is used. Ice box bodies are made of HDPE or LLDPE
material. Cool pads temperature ranges from -3 degree c to -40 degree c depending
upon the temperature requirement inside the box.
